Hanoi is an old city of Viet Nam Its traditional architecture is rich and many sided. The actual fever of building has generated a serious disorder in architecture. The painter has restored an old street quarter of Hanoi in the early years of the XXth century (1900 1920). People were busy repainting the pagoda. Temples were very familiar models in Vietnamese traditional architecture. Some soldiers were carrying a hammock with a mandarin who was cover by large parasols. A man pulled a rickshaw with a woman inside. This Japanese style vehicle had been replaced by the cyclo a half century ago. In front of the temple, a woman sat behind many bunches of multicolored flowers. She was busy speaking with a customer. Nearly, stood a thatched inn and an itinerant snackcounter. Some houses reflected the architectural style of the past century. Behind a window, a young girl was busy beautifying herself with cosmetics while on the neighboring terrace; an old man was attending his beloved bonsais. What is depicted in the painting has nearly disappeared in today Vietnamese city way of life.
