      Ba Nanh pagoda resides in Nguyen Khuyen street now. According to a legend, in this place, long ago there is a buffet belong a woman who sold cake & tea for the student who studying in the Hanoi Temple of Literature that is the first Vietnam University was built in 1070, now still exist near the pagoda), She did not get married, when she is old, she used all her money saving to built a pagoda & became a Buddhist monk. When she died, the villagers make her statue & pose it on the slab that was sat by her during, she sold goods, the statue of hers & the slab still exist in the pagoda now.

    The painting regenerates a peaceful scene of a normal day in Hanoi at about 19 century that occurs in front of the Ba Nanh pagoda. From the left to right of the painting, we see a small kiosk that selling tea (this kind of kiosk is very common in Hanoi in the past & now still exist) – on the road a man was pushing a rickshaw (a kind of simple transport disappeared at about the years 1955 in Hanoi & be replaced by xilo) – two women was selling flower for the people who visiting the pagoda – the man holding the umbrella may be a fortuneteller (a kind of people that often meet in Hanoi in the past) at the end is one more small pub – near the pagoda, we see a house of ordinary person was built in 19 century
